The Kingdom Hearts series is a series of games that feature a boy named Sora and his desire to discover other worlds. He leaves the Destiny Islands and travels to various worlds and interacts with various Disney and Square Enix characters. The game also features a few of its own original characters. This post will be focusing mainly on the characters of Organization XIII. This article will make more sense to those that have played Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
The story behind the members of Organization XIII is that they are Nobodies. A nobody is a "shell" left behind when a person loses their heart and becomes a heartless. The form of a nobody depends on how strong their heart was. Most took a monster-like form with only a select handful maintaining their human form. They have no emotions. They also do not truly exist.
A hidden truth of Organization XIII is how the members got their names. This was able to be discovered after the release of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (KH: BBS), which happened before the events of the first Kingdom Hearts and revealed the true names of some characters. Each name is comprised of the person's original name (their name before they became a heartless) rearranged with an "X" added. This "X" may not be merely an X, but the greek symbol chi. This significance will likely be revealed later in future titles. The only exception to this is Xemnas, as he was revealed to be part of Xehanort.
Some names may be pure speculation, but here are a few of the name comparisons:
Axel -> Lea (revealed in KH:BBS)
Saix -> Isa (also revealed in KH: BBS)
Roxas -> Sora (KH II)
Vexen -> Even (Probably a different spelling of "Evan")
Xion -> Ion (An unstable clone of Sora that eventually her face starts to look like Sora's face. It also explains why she forgets how to summon her keyblade.)
Another hidden message in the series is within the characters themselves. In Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days, we are told that members of Organization XIII have no emotions and cannot "feel" anything. As you play the game, you begin to think that this is a lie. It instead appears as though their emotions are "sleeping". The emotions are there, but they lie dormant until they are triggered. For example, towards the end of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days, Roxas actually cries from sadness.
